FIRMWARE UPDATE PROCEDURE (Macintosh)

This procedure will allow you to use other DSP56301-based boards in the same machine, such as Kyma™, Layla/Darla/Gina, Digidesign PT-Project and PT-Mix/Mix+. By reprogramming the firmware and removing a couple of jumpers, the PCI ID of the board is changed to the unique Sonorus ID number (0x5353), so that the MacOS and drivers can differentiate it from other DSP56301-based boards.

This might be handy if, for example, you're using a STUDI/O to expand your Logic/ProTools setup to add 16 true 24-bit ADAT input/output channels.

If you aren't using one of these other audio boards, this update isn't necessary. However, it won't hurt anything. Furthermore, by replacing the jumpers, you can immediately return to the non-updated state.

Step 1.

Run StudioUpdateROM. This program is included with the Mac drivers, downloadable from our website. The program brings up a text window, giving instructions and prompting you to type things. Here is a listing of what you'll see - the parts in red are what you type:

Then, press and hold the key and press Q to quit the program. You'll get a log file with a name like StudI/O Log 1999/06/09 19.01.10 - keep this in case you need tech support, you can email it to us.

Step 2.

Next, locate the 'boot jumpers':

Now, remove those jumpers and put the STUDI/O card back into your computer -- you're done!

Step 3.

Remember, if you want to 'backtrack', just replace the jumpers:

Note that on early boards (rev-B -- rev-A and rev-C were prototypes), the boot jumpers actually go on the other way (rotated 90 degrees), which is different than the legend on the silkscreen (a bug!). In other words, like this: instead of this: .
