John Grigg's comments:

"First off, I wanted to thank you for the kind mention in your new Application Note for Cool Edit Pro!!  And I wanted to point out one thing - you can also prevent redrawing during playback by turning off AutoScroll During Play and Record in the General Tab of the Options/Settings dialog.  This prevents CEP from trying to scroll the wave drawings to the left to track the cursor during playback or record.  This is a lot easier (at least for us) than constantly resizing the window to do an edit and then resizing again for playback.

"We tried zooming out as far as possible vertically and zooming in all the way horizontally on the theory that, with Autoscroll off, Cool Edit would quickly scroll past the first screen and stop drawing.  This doesn't work, as it seems that CEP is calculating graphics even if it is not drawing them to screen.  It seems best to zoom out as far as possible in both dimensions to minimize the size of the wave features that CoolEdit must draw.  There also seems to be some benefit to making the CEP window as small as possible, so that the minimum number of tracks are visible during play and record.  Of course, our machine is much slower and less capable than yours, so we may be seeing effects that are not noticeable on your hardware.
