DO IT YOURSELF BREAKOUT BOX FOR THE SYNC BACKPLATE
This project was done by one of our beta testers, Steve
Gould. He just got a Blue G3 Mac
(Yosemite), and didn't want to give up a slot for the Backplate. This
is his story....
As discussed, here was my project this week. I searched everywhere for a box
to house the backplate (Radio Shack, electronics stores, dollar stores,
etc.). What I ended up using was a plastic case from an 8mm Exabyte backup
tape. I cut the holes out with an exacto knife and placed all the components
inside the plastic case. The cable then runs out of this case.

Getting the cable from the breakout box to the card inside the G3 was the
bigger problem. I tried a bunch of things but the only was I was able to get
the cable out without pinching it was to remove the video card, run the
cable through the opening, and then put the video card back. Surprisingly
this does not pinch the cable and there's actually still enough play if the
cable needs to be pulled back in or out.

You can see how the cable runs along the side of the video card and out through the back to
connect the breakout box.

While this was certainly not an easy, do-it-yourself project, it at least gives you a basic
prototype for a breakout box design and lets you know how to get the cable
from the Studi/o to the outside of the box relatively easily.
